It deals heavily with themes of desperation and hopelessness, and while there are definitely some moments designed to lighten the mood, it takes itself pretty seriously. It is worth noting that although I played through the Ultimate Edition on the Xbox Series S, it hasn’t received any next-gen enhancements (like The Master Chief Collection), meaning it’s still running as an Xbox One title via backwards compatibility.

As far as performance is concerned, the campaign still only runs at 30 fps, but the multiplayer has been updated to run at an incredibly smooth 60 fps, making for a more fluid competitive experience. The power of the Xbox One allows for a sharper resolution, more detailed textures, and the ability to make certain aspects of the environment (such as foliage and water effects) look much more realistic. Unfortunately, not all of the changes are for the best.įirst and foremost, the Ultimate Edition is without a doubt a much more visually arresting version of the game. The visual fidelity, immersive audio, and innovative cover-based gameplay were all massive leaps forward for console gaming and quickly cemented Gears of War as a must-play system seller.
